In 2018, David de Tscharner was welcomed as the third resident at Atelier Pierre Culot. Immersing himself in the atmosphere of the place, he explored the boundaries between craft and sculpture. Guided by Pascal Slootmakers, the workshop’s director, he first learned the basics of plate molding before subverting the technique. On these molded supports, he created architectural compositions using fragments of tableware, playing with ideas of past and present, construction and deconstruction, always in a deliberately playful spirit.

The history of the atelier and the legacy of Pierre Culot strongly informed his approach. For glazing, he chose an unconventional process: instead of treating each piece individually, he stacked the plates, inspired by the piles of ceramics scattered around the workshop. The glaze seeped into the gaps, fusing the assemblages and making the process visible. The result resembles a collage, blurring the line between utility and sculpture, where both identities merge rather than oppose each other
