Ceramics Masterclass - 10, 11, 12 May & 6 July 2024

The legacy of Pierre Culot with Olivier Hermia

Dear ceramic enthusiasts,

We invite you to take a journey of artistic mastery and expression during a unique masterclass at the Atelier Pierre Culot, led by ceramic potter Olivier Hermia.

For 4 days, you’ll have the chance to forge links between art, sculpture and ceramic architecture at the historic workshop of Pierre Culot (1938-2011), 7 rue de la Poterie in Roux-Miroir, Belgium.

In 1958, Pierre Culot was 20 years old and consolidating his apprenticeship with Bernard Leach. He had trained with ceramist Antoine de Vinck after attending the École d’Art de Maredsous. On two occasions, he travelled to Japan to visit Shoji Hamada.

The masterclass is aimed at potters of intermediate level and above. As you master the art of throwing pieces weighing several kilos (3,4,5kg), Olivier will guide you through the creation of large-scale ceramics.

These precise shaping and assembly techniques will enable you to go beyond standard formats while retaining your own aspirations and style.

In addition to technique, the masterclass will include an exploration of the work of Pierre Culot, whose many original ceramics spanning five decades will be on display.

Limited to six participants, this masterclass will offer a rich and intimate experience.

In the summer, a glazing session awaits you, where you can experiment with the preparation and use of stoneware and ash glazes, inspired by the research of Daniel de Montmollin.

The whole team looks forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a wonderful adventure of sharing and exchange.
